Independence is a good thing. Self-reliance is also a good thing. Being an Island is not a good thing.

As I said before, social interaction is needed for our health. We are, like it or not, social animals. Trying to carry the entire load alone is not healthy. So why do so many people try to do it all alone?

Bob walks up to Tom, and they start a conversation. Tom is annoyed with his cat.
“Ya know Bob, I have the stupidest cat in the world.”
“Really, Tom? Why?”
“Well, the cat got up on the hot stove and burned his paw. Now the cat avoids the stove.”
“Well, Tom, it seems like the cat learned to avoid the hot stove. Seems pretty smart to me.”
“Yeah, but he won’t get near the cold stove either.”

I knew a woman who had a bad breakup with her first boyfriend. She became a lesbian from that experience. She reminds me of Tom’s cat.

I know a man who won’t date redheads because of his ex wife. Tom’s cat meows again and avoids the stove that hasn’t been used in a month.

Being Spiky does not equate to being so Independent that no one can get close.
