General Update
Jan. 20th, 2008 10:42 amThe first week of school is done, and there is some adjustment to be had, definitely.
The school is very different from UTA. For one thing, they have no orchestra at all, (Impossible with one violinist and one bassist as the only strings players) and the wind ensemble has only five brass and an abundance of woodwinds. This isn't too surprising, as there's another university in town known for its music program. Also, as expected, a vast majority of the music students are music therapy majors.
Guardian is still not getting the campus. He gets distracted easily by all the new sights, and it'll take a lot more work to get him focusing on task to get me around, but he'll get it eventually. There's this step, not even a full one, that he tripped me over on our first time working the route between my T-Th classes, and he can get to the music building from there and can get to it easily, so that is at least something.
The music building has a lounge, something UTA sorely lacked. It's nice to have a place to relax and hang out, especially on T-Th when I have that long afternoon break. (12:30 to 6 on Tuesday, 12:30 to 4:30 on Thursday) I'm making friends and getting to know people there, and it's cool.
The move is coming along. Now we're at the unpacking and arranging end, and I'll have to do some furniture buying soon too to outfit the living room. I'm connected to the net, but M isn't because she's got her computer at the other end of this fairly long house and it's a rather old one, so it doesn't have wireless. She'll pick up an external wireless unit next weekend when she gets her next paycheck. The Buffalo Router I have for the network autodetected the Verizon FIOS router with no problem, and all we had to do afterwared was specify the gateway. I love that router, as it constantly minimizes my problems intuitively. I would heartily recommend Buffalo to anyone who needs a good wireless router with no reservations whatsoever.
My room is almost finished -- I just need to hang the artwork. (Yes, I know I'm blind, but artwork makes a room seem more lived in for sighted people when they see it) We're working on the kitchen this weekend to get it into shape, and I'll work on mucking out the piles of boxes in the living room this week, and we'll do more on that next weekend. We still have to stain the boards for the table base so I can reassemble the game table, and then we'll need to hang artwork in there and get things on the shelves. The living room is a much bigger problem, as I have no furniture for there. I also need to find someone local with a truck to move a rolltop desk, filing cabinet, chair, and coat rack from Richardson up here to Denton soon too.
I'm sore. It's the same old deep muscle soreness I had at guide dog school, and I can't find my massager in the packed stuff so I can't deal with it right now.
We're looking for a roommate, as this place is wonderful but it's also a bit much for us to afford by ourselves. Plus we have two unused bedrooms, though one of them may be occupied by M's boyfriend if he comes down from Kansas.
I have Monday off for MLK day, so I have a four day weekend. (The university doesn't do classes on Fridays, for the most part) I'm using it to dig out and get things arranged. Fun.
While shopping at a rather unusual Walmart last night, (no screaming kids -- if they keep that up they will get kicked out of the store chain) I had a brush with the stuff being sold for the Most Hated Day. I'm hoping that I can avoid the hoopla associated with it, but since I go to a university where the women outnumber the men nine to one, I fear that last year's much milder season may have been only a brief lull. We shall see.
