And now, I'm finally working on Gypsy Heir tunes.
Back in 1999 I got a song title in my head -- Pandora's Broomcloset. Sometimes titles can become evocative, and that one stuck with me. So, the muse being fickle, I filed the title away and left it for another day. Then, about a year ago, suddenly I was playing around with the phrase and lyrics started to flow. Of course I ran to the keyboard and wrote them down in a file, and then started exploring what the music would sound like.
Pandora's Broomcloset is a ballad. Instrumentation is Viola, voice, drums, bass, and a piano and strings sound. It's very simple, (more on that in a minute) and is in BABABAB form in the key of E major with a fairly minor melody.
My ex asked me right after I thought of the title why I never wrote anything simple. So I'd always planned for this to be a fairly accessible tune with simple structure and not too much density in arrangement.
About two years after that while I was facilitating a team building exercise, I wrote in my Palm Pilot the phrase, "Everywhere you go they follow you follow you, they're behind youu everywhere you go. Everywhere you go they follow you follow you, they all think you're in the know." I filed it away for later use, and started to get the idea after some rather interesting things in my life that these were the people in the pagan communities that, through their own actions and cult of personality, tended to start all the conflict in the community. Of course, this is something fairly common in a spiritual movement that expects people to rubber-stamp everyone else's own view of spirituality no matter how far off plumb it might be, so it's not expected. But I started formulating ideas to go with this first line. I was lucky as a melody came in with it, so I had a good start. Then I was reading a newsgroup about a cult of personality surrounding someone totally out of the pagan community, and the phrase Coven of Personality came to mind. The phrase has a rhythm, so it was easy for me to finish the rhythmic line, and from there things took off.
Coven of Personality is in ABABCAB form in the key of D major. Instrumentation is drums, bass, voice, Viola, and Sitar, along with some nice tablas to spice up the percussion.
On the progress front, I have Kiss the Sun, Played, and REligous Rights left for Gypsy Heir. The Ballad of Jason and Martine is about 75% done, but I'm not feeling the inspiration on that one. Chances are good I'll be finished before the 15th, so then I'll start recording practice versions of things and look at getting things started with the songs for the first album release, the album Soundcheck by Airtime.
