Those of you who know me well know that I'm something of a music fiend, and my standards are quite high. It can't be just some random pop or rock creation with no depth to it to get my attention, that's why I hose a music production yahoogroup and spend my time really listening for good bands that really get my attention. I don't find many.

Yesterday I was trying to find 40 tracks to download so I could get my allotment at emusic and then close my account. I did a search on Genesis, thinking I might find a live concert or something. Instead I got the page saying they didn't have any, and to try these other groups. I tried the first one, and was knocked out. Deep textural lines with smooth vocals, powerful guitars, and pulsing basses and great drumming. A band that sounds like a cross between Pink Floyd, Focus, and Ozric Tentacles. The lead vocalist sounds like someone I've heard before, but I can't place who. He takes his time getting the words out, and the music is both rhythmically complex and also deeply layered so that subsequent listenings bring out new things you didn't hear the last time.

The band is Porcupine Tree, and they've been around for a while. Emusic has a lot of their stuff, and if you decide you want to go there and get it, let me know, because if I send you an invite we both get 50 free downloads. The site will also let you preview tunes, and I am quite impressed. I'm keeping my membership until I get the rest of this stuff, I'm so pleased with it.

OMG! You JUST found out about Porcupine Tree?! How have you LIVED?
*bounces anxiously*
My brother gave me one of their CDs when I started asking if he knew of any bands that had a sound like Spock's Beard (if you don't know of them, hunt them down, especially the albums "The Kindness of Strangers," "Feel Euphoria," and "Snow")

Listened to them. They didn't sound much like porcupine Tree to me, though I was only getting short 20 second snippets. Only one of the three albums you mentioned was available on emusic. I'll look for more. After all, this is one of the reasons I posted this. I generally feel that with certain exceptions Rock died in 1992, as not much of any value has been recorded since then. It's all disposable crap done for the moment, not something you want to form long lasting relationships with. (I feel this way about pop as well, and to an extent, funk) But I don't have time to listen to everything. I tend to stay with bands I like, like Ozric Tentacles, lots of prog rock groups, and a few others. So recommendations are always appreciated for things that have texture, depth, and not too much noise. (I've gotten tired of guitar heavy noisy music)

They sound interesting. More guitar focused than is my normal wont, but they do get textural enough for my tastes. I've downloaded a couple of things, including their collaboration with the great Roky Ericson. (If you haven't listened to his seminal band, the Thirteenth Floor Elevators yet, do so -- they pretty much invented psychedelic rock)

Thanks for the tip! Also check out Explosions in the Sky and Underworld. On the local tip, see Octopus Project, Day of the Double Agent, and Denton-based Shiny on the Edges (if they are still around.) Day of the Double Agent has this chick who plays the theramin like she's wrestling with the damn thing. It is really impressive.
