Okay, Here I am at the end of the second week. I'm almost at NaNoWriMo's writing total for the month at this point. If I keep up this level of production I'll hit over 100,000 words for the month including the stuff written before the month started, but I doubt I'll hit that, as I am done with Chapter 14 and there are only eight chapters to be written wholesale and the last chapter, 23, which is about a third of where I'd like it to be in length. I have missed something, as I left out the 4th of July completely in the narrative, and there will be a bit of stuff filling up from earlier, but I don't know I'll hit that total. I am, however, quite happy with how the story is turning out, though the next couple of chapters will be a lot harder to write, as I want to start some foreshadowing without giving away the big surprise, and the plot points I want to hit in those chapters aren't enough to carry over three thousand words, at least not with my lean writing style. Still, I've made great progress on this, and The first major milestone in the story is down, with two more to go. The second one is about three chapters ahead, at least it's genesis, so I need to ramp up to it slowly (It's weird being able to use adverbs freely in writing anything with how little I use them when working on the book) and having it come through in an organic fashion. I also have a definite place I need the big trigger to happen, and I have to find a way to get my main character there. But this is using my writing skills in a different way, and I'm surprised that I can get something of length down on paper. My other novel is situational instead of plot driven, and so it's a different experience to write.
One other thing I did with this is the use of Excel to track progress. I've never done this before, but it works well for me, as I can see direct daily results in what I'm doing and keep things moving forward. It also helps me to fill in sections light on detail so this doesn't collapse into a novella like Diversity and several other works did. (I might revisit that one, as I've had people tell me the concept for it is really fascinating, but I feel it shuts down a bit fast for my tastes) The statistics below come from my spreadsheet.
The other thing I did differently in this is treat each chapter as a file of its own. It makes it a bit harder to search, but it also allows me to add things in the narrative easier. I'll assemble it together when I finish it and edit and proof as a single document.

Still, 48k in two weeks. That sucketh not.
