NaNoWriMo: Week 3

Okay, I'm one and a half chapters from the end of the first structural pass through the book. I'm down to the denouement now. I'm making notes of things I want to add earlier in the story so I can have something to write after Wednesday's expansion of the last chapter. Current estimates for length based on what's written so far are 116,871 based on day to day writing output and 91,165 based on chapter length. (I love Excel for its ability to help me track these things automatically) The current total word length, including all prior work, is 84,342. So I'm not far from the projected total. After I write the chapter tomorrow that projected total will get a lot more accurate, as chapter 22 hasn't been written yet, and so the calculations don't take into consideration the eleven hundred words in chapter 23.
I'll use this for novels in the future. Having Excel as a tracking tool is great, and it lets me better control the production of the book. I'm pleased with how everything is flowing, and it also helps me stay on task each day.
I set an initial goal of 2,000 words each day, and I've exceeded that every day, but only once to an extreme degree. I sit down and write each morning until I hit that total, then take care of things like getting dressed and getting breakfast. Anything I write after that is a bonus.
This last chapter was one of the hardest ones to get down, as it has one main plot point that happens in it, and I needed to work up to it and then unwind it as it continues through the rest of the chapter. There was a lot to write and not much material for it. The next one will be even harder, as I can't postpone its major point much in the chapter -- this chapter ended with a partial cliffhanger, so it needs fast resolution next chapter.
This has been fun, but a lot of work. I've tried to let characters flow in and out of the story as they need to, like they do in life.
