Certain things tend to grab the imagination.

Over on Garland Road (and also up on Jupiter near the freeway) were the car lots for Uncle Buddy's Used Cars. Something about this fired the creative and referential spirit for both me and my former roommate. It wasn't the reality of Uncle Buddy, it was the potential. We concocted this mythology about Uncle Buddy being a pillar of the community, one of the upstanding folk who would keep tabs on how everyone was doing, connecting them with people in his vast network to help them deal with rough spots, and in general acting as a bastion of the area. In this alternate reality he was also the one to go to for advice and emotional support. When discussing him we'd drop into a more rural accent, one could almost say a dialect, and it could be a lot of fun. Dad heard us doing this on the way back from a Kaboom Town gathering several years ago, and it mystified him at first, but he was always great at joining in on the fun. This could mystify other people too, but it was fun, and I liked how he was willing to get involved in it.

I don't know if it was the downturn during The Year Of The Plague or the more recent problems folks selling cars have had thanks to the problems with getting chips for new cars, but the location on Garland Road is closed, and I've been told so's the one on Jupiter. This of course changes the riffing, and since my former roommate is also deep behind the "Pine Curtain" these days there's not as much time to get into this kind of inside humor.

I've sort of been on a Quarterflash kick lately. I like the kind of stuff Marv Ross writes and Rindy Ross sings and plays, and I've been very interested in how a hit band from the early 80's changes in the intervening time. So I've bought all of their albums so far other than last year's A Better World, because it's only available on Band Camp and I wanted to check my finances first.

And their 5th album, Goodbye Uncle Buzz, arrived today. Very interesting album, different in so many ways from their earlier stuff. Listening to the title track brought to mind all those riffs on Uncle Buddy, though it's about a very different situation.
I think it's a good one for a mid-week listen, so here it is. Enjoy.
