Writing and Music and Stuff
Oct. 13th, 2025 08:49 amYes, folks, here is yet another Nyyki update that almost nobody will read. It does, however, make a useful chronicle of what’s been going on with me.
It was a quiet week at the start, but it picked up a lot.
lanalucy and I got some editing done, including several recent short stories. Where she works the schedule is done by someone who is overworked, deadline driven, or a combination of the two, because the schedule for the week comes out on Sunday night. This kind of stuff makes me want to run a seminar on how to do a schedule, because in the past I’ve had a lot of success with it, but she lives too far away for me to walk out there and there’s no mass transit out that way (yet). I hope to find out tomorrow when we’ll be able to edit this coming week. And on the novel news, we got four chapters intoLove is a Battlefield, the side story to the Sheryl stories that gives the reader a clear picture of what went down before the other stories happened. I think that one will run through fast.
I’ve finished, spell checked, and done some proofreading on The Return of DJ Hobo, the novel set in The World of Darkness®. So that’s another novel to be edited.
Yesterday someone I know (and have known for 41 years) came by to help me with some tasks, three in particular. We got one done, the setting up of my guitar rig; it’s audio cabled, powered, and connected through MIDI, so it’s ready to use. I’ll have to spend some time working how the four FX modules and one foot controller work with each other to create composite sounds, then I’m going to find specific songs so I can build the sound I want for those songs. I’ve got one more thing to incorporate into that rig, but that’ll take some time and the help of an engineer to make that a reality. It’s also not an urgent thing. The two things we didn’t get to? Cabling a ten space rack filled with gear I’ll use when doing live PA work, and configuring some things in my master keyboard and the secondary one so I can control things better; everything is musical on that section of my to-do list. My Yamaha keyboard is also not sounding, which may be one or more of myriad things going on, so that’ll need some troubleshooting. I’m going to stay busy with all the stuff I’ve got on my to-do list, that’s for sure.
The one problem with the person who helped me is that he’s not someone who gets along with others, so by the time we got done, after he was over an hour and a half late, I was ready to be done with his presence. He’s argumentative, has a tendency to compare everything so nothing can be discussed as itself, and he has this habit of slipping out of the specific into macro level thinking on a regular and unpredictable basis. For example, I was talking about England, and their issues with how they’ve started treating trans people, and he immediately had to jump in and talk about how much worse it is here. And he contended that I was saying that England was worse than here for trans people, which I in no way said. Contributing to my mood was the little detail that I had breakfast around 7:30am and we were supposed to break to get something to eat, but he’s like a terrier with a ratfox/Jack Russel/whatever the terrier was bred for when there’s a problem. Argh.
I’m chugging away at the third Holly and the Wizards novel, and I’m also working on a five-part work for one of my musical projects; the first section, “Walking in Shadow”, is pretty much done save for some textural and sound effects stuff I’m going to drop in. Part 2, “Red Harvest Moon”, is more of a problem because I remember what I was doing back when we were playing it in the group, but I don’t know the melody or chord progression. Part 3, “Black Cat Walking”, is something I know and I’ve got a good thing to slot into part 4. The ending section I used back then, which was a daybreak section, isn’t going to work these days, so that’s going to mean coming up with something new.
My health seems to be fine right now, and that’s something I don’t ever take for granted anymore.

Date: 2025-10-13 11:47 pm (UTC)I am not enthused with my current support resources; I'd like to get someone else to do the other two things, but I don't have a lot of options for them. And one of them is going to require some tricky printing on an adhesive-backed page. But at least there's progress.
