Sea Kittens? Seriously? You've got to be pulling my leg on this one. Someone call up the clue fairy and write him or her up for poor job performance, because this one obviously makes it clear the clue fairy isn't doing the job anymore.

Sea kittens. Sheesh. The idiots and terminally clueless are going to have to work really hard to top an idea as utterly devoid of cognition as that.

I was convinced some time back that that particular group had developed a curiously collective variety of insanity, to my morbid fascination, but this, and picketing the WKC show in New York wearing KKK robes, tell me that they've gone to a place where I have no desire to follow. (I started feeling that way after hearing of incidents where some particularly zealous folks from that particular group began going to gun shows and loading randomly selected display guns with live ammo. And other things.)

And I'm more empathic toward animals than almost anyone I know, and thoroughly enjoy the presence of furry companions of several species (and am on a first name basis with the neighbors' dog, after the "Zeus is bored" incident), and the thought of doing even accidental harm to them is painful to me. But they go far, far beyond that, and have become so extreme it's a wonder they have any support left at all. (The fact that they evidently do bothers me in a very different way.) And the sad thing is that since they've effectively monopolized the market for organizations promoting animal welfare, it's kind of hard to do anything in a charitable sense without going through them.

I might add that it's increasingly the case that they actually have a *negative* net impact on consumer culture by the very extreme nature of their campaign tactics -- they're often so confrontational and offensive about their PR stunts that people now tend to do the opposite of what they want just to spite them ..
