Weirdness

I keep hearing this sound outside like someone is frying bacon at a great distance or someone is starting an old record with lots of clicks and pops. And when I go outside beyond the porch or eaves my head gets damp. Anyone have any idea what's causing this? I seem to remember something along this line from the distant past, but I've forgotten exactly what it is.
