Well, I now have 2 loads of boxes left to get from my storage unit, as well as the big fridge and the freezer. The roommate is out for the night, chilling, and I've taken this time to geek out a bit.
Since my monitor is in the storage unit (still) I've borrowed the roomie's monitor (with permission.) I got the connection working to the Internet using SWB's program, then went through some hell getting the router configured. I had to purge all kinds of old settings and other garbage to get it working. But now, it works, and since SWB uses a dialer, the router does that for me now. I noticed a SUBSTANTIAL speed difference when I stopped using the dialer program and just let the router do the job. (It's a Netgear RT311 running through a Hawking 16 port switch.)
Since I was already tweaking things, I went ahead and installed Trillian. I love having all of my IM connections on one program, and the silly thing will also do multiples of the same account. Handy.
The next step is to open up the computer and install the 10/100 ethernet card that came with the DSL package. The machine has a 10mbt card with a coax connection on it. (I made the switch to Cat5 last fall after running coax 10base2 for many years) I'll also pull the second Parallel port out, and I'm tempted to yank the modem, though I should probably not dot on that, in case DSL craters at some point.
I'm finding broken things in my stuff. I'm not amused, but my family was somewhat careless when they helped me move in. I'm dreading what I find when I start going through record albums (The really big black CD's for you youngsters) and Laserdiscs. I have a lot of scarring on my good wood furniture, and I've had to reattach the backs on 2 fir bookshelves. My armoire will need resanding in several places. That means I need to find the right stain color again. I know it is a Minwax brand.
The roomie is somewhat surprised by the way that my boxes are not piling up, except outside the front door, empty. I did a lot of clearing and purging going into this, so I don't have a lot of boxes of "miscellaneous crap that got thrown into a box at the last minute and needs to go in about 30 different places." I also had some real pros helping me pack things. I am amazed at how well my kitchen stuff was packed -- Meghann, you rock.
The Drums are completely set up. Even the gong, though it is not in its permanent setup, only something that will work for now. More synthesizers will come home tomorrow, along with my big synth rack and my sampler rack. I'll have some configuring and such to do, but I don't expect it to take overlong there either -- that was designed to be portable and quickly set up-able.
After everything is all said and done, I'll have a couple of interesting projects. I want to hang heavy drapes in the Temple Room (actually a dining room, till we got ahold of it)to control light and to separate the room from the rest of the house. I need to build myself a desk, at least one 7' bookshelf, and probably a cabinet for my records, laserdiscs, videotapes (Including all 5 seasons of Babylon 5, attendant movies, and the spin off series Crusade) and DVD's. I'll need shelves for the TV electronics too, until I find myself able to afford an armoire for the electronics. I am tempted to build one, but I'm not sure I want to go that far yet. The desk will be enough of an engineering challenge.
That reminds me -- Home Depot used to carry pre-fabbed solid wood table tops. I need at least three 3'x3'x2" table tops. If anyone sees any, I'd love to get a price. They will save me HUGE effort.
The view here is amazing. I have a great long view from my back porch. I can watch storms come in, and the wildlife here is amazing. The tiny dog was seriously interested in finding out what possum tasted like last night -- I'm glad I had her leashed. I've also seen coons, skunks, what looked to be a very large fox or a very small coyote, and several lizards. I'm really glad I made this move.
