Clearing up a Myth.
Mar. 19th, 2003 11:13 amIn reading a friend's journal, I saw, once again, the false quote of Chief Seattle's supposed speech on environmentalism.
Despite it's clear logical issues (Whippoorwills and Buffalo are not indigenous to the pacific northwest, and the buffalo massacres reached their peak only after Seattle's death) many people still attribute it to him.
http://www.snopes.com/quotes/seattle.htm has the story on this issue. I'll leave it to snopes to explain it.
Now, I'm not saying this is a bad speech. It has a good message. But let's not use an American Tribal figure to add weight to a modern message. It's like the old saying, 'Anyone will back your Idea if you can convince them that Benjamin Franklin thought of it."
