Sci-Fi Book and Movie Suggestions

I need suggestions for good books and movies where the main character is one of the following list of professions in a science fiction or far future environment. Please exclude post-apocalyptic stories and movies from the list, as that's not the sub-genre I'm dealing with. Comic book suggestions are also a good bet. I'd also like to avoid media tie-in works like Stargate, Star Trek, Babylon 5, etc.

I'd like a short blurb about the book or movie along with the author if possible. And if you can think of any other common roles in science fiction stories, feel free to throw those in with book or movie suggestions as well.
