"Going back, to my old school..."
Nov. 16th, 2007 05:12 pmMade a run up to Denton today to start the process of getting things in place to move up there.
First we stopped in at Cool Beans for a burger. They have a cool special where they throw in your drink for free. It's nice getting a decent bacon cheese burger with fries and a drink for under five bucks. Whiole we were there we surveyed the disaster zone. Cool Beans is still standing of course, and a couple of other buildings still stnd as well, possibly the Corkscrew and the barber shop. But the rest of the corner of Fry and Hickory/Fry and Oak is a fenced in field of dirt, gravel, and sand.
We got to talking with the barkeep at Cool Beans, and she told it it looks like a Toxic Hell, McDeath, and CVS are going in there. All those cool buildings were ripped out for these things. To add insult to injury, The Tomato hasn't found a new location yet. Every time they find a good location someone gets there first. It's a crime.
After a quite tasty lunch, we made our way to TWU. The campus is a lot more hilly than I thought it would be, and Guardian and I got a bit of a workout. We stopped by admissions, the music department, Disability Services, and Commuter services. They're going to send me some information on finding a place to live there, and they also gave me a hefty stack of paper - catalogs, course schedules, and paperwork I need to fill out for them.
TWU is a lot smaller than I expected. They're just over 12,000 students right now, and a lot of those are online students. The mix is about 90% female, as befits a university with "Women's" in the name.
While leaving, my O&M trainer saw a bumper sticker: "I'm low on estrogen, and I have a gun." Funny. The campus was nice, but fairly quiet -- they consider themselves to be mostly a 4 day university, though some classes on Fridays have become necessary in recent years with the high enrollment.
After leaving TWU we went looking for rental signs. But at the first light, my O&M trainer rolled down the window, and we got a welcome sound as the light changed -- a bird chirp. Denton has auditory indicators on their traffic signals, a welcome change from life in the stupidest city in the United states.
I managed to get four slips of paper from a bulletin board with names of people looking for roommates, so I'll give them a call as soon as I get someone on hand who can read them to me.
I'm really looking forward to this move. Living someplace with mass transit will be nice, and I really want to get back in school to work on my graduate degree. The only reason I went to college in the first place was to get a sheepskin so I could go for graduate work -- everything I want to do is taught at the graduate level. I've demonstrated that I'm good at school with my performance on the bachelor's level, so I don't expect much problem moving forward. And I like Denton when I'm not having to rely on making a living there, as the job options aren't the best.
Now, to find a place to live, then get moved. Moving sucks, but at least it's moving from a not so good place to a place of more opportunity, so I'm not resenting it too heavily. Hopefully after this weekend I'll have a countdown going to the move. Fun.
